With new knowledge obtained from ABS-CBN News photojournalist-editor and University of Santo Tomas (UST) journalism instructor Alexis Carlo "Alec" Corpuz, BAJ 202 Class, in partnership with The Communiqué, wrapped up a four-hour long photojournalism seminar-workshop titled “Istorya sa Likod ng mga Kuha” at the College of Arts and Letters (CAL) theater, on Monday, November 20.

Corpuz discussed the importance of images in news reporting and the ethical practices to consider when taking photos. It happened as the speaker asked students from which the majority came from Bachelor of Arts in Journalism (BAJ), as to what inspired their interest in the program leading them to pursue it.

“Being a journalist, you’re basically a medium for other people to express themselves and show their reality of life.” RRJ Roxas, a student from BAJ 2B answered.

“It allows you to be more attached to people and learn how to sympathize and empathize with them in your daily life,” he added.

As part of the interactive seminar, student participants were tasked to group themselves into 3-5 members to capture a human interest story photo within the university, providing a caption to elaborate their chosen image.

Moreover, Corpuz delivered insights and suggestions on outputs presented by students to further hone their skills in photography and caption-making. For him, it is important to work with whatever is available in the environment as it is essential to maximize present resources that can be used to tell stories more effectively.

Aside from gaining and exchanging knowledge, students from BAJ 2A, Jc Frelle Anne Estrella,  and Eljay Gamit from BAJ 2B also shared their talent in singing and playing the ukulele during the program.  Prizes were also granted to lucky winners of the raffle made possible by Sir Leuvert Catalan, BAJ 202 class instructor and former publication adviser.

Questions from students were also entertained during the program, among them regarding the emerging issue of Artificial Intelligence (AI) generated images in the field.

“The goal of photojournalism is to document human experience,” Corpuz started, paving the way to answer the student’s question, “paano mo masasabing this is the human experience, kung wala namang human do’n?” he continued.
