Radio anchorman Juan Jumalon, better known as DJ Johnny Walker of GOLD FM 94.7 Calamba was fatally shot during his live broadcast by unidentified assailants, on November 5.
The incident happened at Jumalon’s residence in Calamba, Misamis Occidental where his home-based working setup is located, and was caught on the station’s Facebook livestream which is now making the rounds in social media.
Attackers successfully entered Jumalon’s property after pretending to announce “important matters” with the victim and later on, forced their way in. One pointed a gun at the home security, while the other proceeded to Jumalon’s studio, shooting him in the lower lip and at the back portion of his head as per town’s police officer-in-charge Corporal Eliver Quico.
Jumalon was rushed into the hospital by family members, but he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
The death of Juan Jumalon is in addition to almost 200 recorded cases of killings among journalists in the Philippines since 1986, which raises further concern for the safety, particularly of those who work in the media field.
However, Colonel Dwight Monato, Misamis Occidental police director sees the intention behind the incident in a different light as he stated that Jumalon had a personal argument with the two perpetrators of the assassination even before the attack.
“We are now actively conducting a thorough investigation to identify the perpetrators of this crime and bring them to justice. A [SITG] will be created to spearhead and coordinate the investigative efforts to facilitate the speedy resolution of the case,” PRO10 acting regional director Police Brigadier General Ricardo Layug Jr. said.
This is a developing story.
